Timothy Mayhew at Philadelphia Museum of Art

Timothy David Mayhew has been invited to present his research on traditional 14th to 19th century old master natural black chalk drawing materials and techniques at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. These lectures and demonstrations will be given at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on April 21st and 22nd of 2009, and will be accompanied by Mayhew’s drawings done in the traditional old master drawing medium of natural black chalk. Mayhew has spent the past two decades conducting research into the drawing materials and techniques of the old masters. Since 1994, he has given a series of annual lectures on these topics at Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum. He was invited to give the Virginia F. Harrison Elliott Lecture at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, which was delivered in June 2008, entitled, Aux trois crayons: The history, science, and technique of the three naturally-occurring chalks in traditional 14th-19th century old master drawing. His undergraduate studies were done at the University of Michigan, and he obtained his doctorate from Wayne State University in 1978.
